What was the problem you were experiencing before you started training with Common Purpose?
I suffer from ankylosing spondylitis. It’s basically the fusing of my spinal vertebrae. This has led to lots of stiffness, poor mobility, flexibility and hence a lot of discomfort over the years.

Have you previously tried anything else to achieve your goals? If so, what was this?
Some physiotherapy and a number of personal trainers, but often training regimes were quite structured and inflexible with too much repetition. I would continue to suffer from episodes of discomfort.

What results have you achieved working with Common Purpose?
Significant improvement in flexibility and mobility from varied workouts and the first time I have undertaken training with weights, with the result of much improved stamina and ability to use weights I never thought I could ever manage! I’ve picked up as much as 140 Kg from the floor, Squatted 100 Kg and haven’t suffered from any back pain since 2017.

What was the best thing about achieving this?
Just feeling great and having no joint pain for once!

What’s your favourite exercise or workout and why?
Most weight training as I just never thought I could do it. Feels great to achieve those occasional personal bests!

What’s your least favourite exercise or workout and why?
Step ups with reverse lunges as it combines the two challenges I have most difficulty with and they’re really tiring!

What other benefits have you enjoyed as a result of working with Common Purpose?
Recently with the help of the team, I’ve been able to implement Intermittent Fasting and have since lost about 7 Kgs. But perhaps most importantly, just being able to do normal things and play sports with my children.

What do your friends and family think of your new lifestyle and your commitment to personal training?
Everyones been generally impressed with the fact that I keep going and just how much it’s helped me in managing my Ankylosing Spondylitis.

What would you say to anyone considering working with Common Purpose and why?
Try it! They’re talented trainers who think very hard about the most appropriate programmes, keep it varied and help you have fun, between the pain along the way.

Have you had to cut back on other costs to afford personal training? And was it worth it?
No, but even so, with the health benefits it has brought me, the cost isn’t a consideration. It is worth every penny.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’d wish Sam could learn to count!
